Monthly household budget template

Compare a spending plan with what actually happened. Write planned and actual amounts side by side, then use the difference to adjust next month’s choices.

When this template is useful

Use one copy for a household month and one currency. Enter planned amounts before spending, then record actual amounts as the period progresses. A blank actual amount means the information is missing; enter zero when an expense genuinely did not occur. Review the category differences before carrying the plan into the next month.

  1. Choose a single currency and use the same period for income and expenses.
  2. For each expense, difference means actual minus planned. A positive number means spending exceeded the plan.
  3. Savings are shown separately to avoid counting a transfer as a household expense.

Before starting, decide who will use the record and which period or piece of work it covers. That keeps the entries focused when you return to it or share it with someone else.

Spreadsheet calculations

Planned and actual amounts are totalled across the main and continuation sheets. Differences require both amounts; the total difference waits until entered amounts have matching values.

Where supplied, formula cells are marked separately from input cells. If you add rows or change the structure, check that the formulas still cover the records you intend to include.

Questions before you start

What if I need more space for monthly household budget?

Use the continuation included with the download. Add the main document reference and sheet number so the extra entries remain connected to the original record. Keep the same date and unit conventions.

No. Share your completed blank form and the continuation pages you actually used. Keep the fictional example and guidance for your own reference.

Is this an official or jurisdiction-specific form?
